Redlands, CA- On Thursday, Representative Aguilar tweeted, “the last thing I want to see is a government shutdown,” just a few hours before voting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to shut down the government.
Rep. Aguilar is now claiming that Republicans are at fault for the shutdown, but it was his close friend, Senator Chuck Schumer, who utilized the filibuster to shut the government down, even though Republicans had organized majority support in both Houses of Congress for keeping the government open.
By voting for the shutdown, Rep Aguilar has demonstrated that funding the military, paying government employees, protecting veterans benefits, and maintaining health insurance for low-income children are not top priorities for him or his party. During the last shutdown in 2013, more than 850,000 government workers were furloughed without pay, the private sector lost 120,000 jobs, and gross domestic product fell by $24 billion. Apparently, Rep Aguilar is unable to learn from past mistakes, but that might change if he had to share in the pain.
This is why I strongly support legislation which would prohibit members of Congress from receiving their government salaries during government shutdowns. In the private sector, if you don’t do your job, you don’t get paid. It’s time we hold our representatives to the same set of standards.
Our top priority right now has to be ending the shutdown. Veterans should get their benefits and low-income children should keep their health insurance. I therefore call on Rep. Aguilar and his party to their partisan politics aside, fulfill their duty to our country, and the end the shutdown immediately.
