San Bernardino, CA – Sean Flynn, candidate for Congress in California’s 31st District, issued the following statement in response to the passage of the Disaster Relief Act H.R. 3823:
As of last week, 56% of Puerto Ricans were without running water, 95% were without electricity, 91% were without cell services, and only 1 of 47 hospitals was fully functional. Hurricane Maria shattered an already fragile economy that could now face a financial crisis in the coming weeks. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to our fellow American citizens affected in both Puerto Rico and Houston, Texas.
Recently, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3823, which provided critical emergency tax relief for Americans and businesses impacted by recent hurricanes. The House passed this bipartisan measure without the support of Congressman Pete Aguilar. With no explanation, Rep. Aguilar joined Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in opposition to this desperately needed relief measure.
As we have seen time and again, Congressman Aguilar intentionally avoids these rare opportunities to work with Republicans across the aisle to pass sensible legislation. H.R. 3823 was supported by 43 of Congressman Aguilar’s Democrat colleagues as well as hundreds of Republicans. Was Aguilar’s aversion to bipartisan cooperation his only reason for voting “no”? I call on Rep. Aguilar to explain his vote and offer an alternative to the struggling Americans in Puerto Rico and Houston who need our help.
